Golden Retriever Puppies The breed originated from a series of marriages performed by Lord Tweedmouth from 1864 onwards. The starting point was his acquisition of Coated Retriever is a handsome yellow color that fell to the ground flat on his Guisechan, near Inverness in Scotland. He mated this dog to a Tweed Water Spaniel, the generation now long extinct, and then raised the offspring of this mating using the occasional outcross to the Irish Setter, a second Tweed Water Spaniel and a black Flat Coated Retriever. The dogs produced proved to be a great worker, obedient and interesting. Puppies of marriage given to friends and family, especially his nephew, Lord Ilchester, who also bred them. The dogs bred true to type, and a pioneer of the breed we know today was established. It was not until 1908 that the breed came into the public eye. Lord Harcourt had formed a great desire to procreate, and gathered to his country estate at Nuneham Park, Oxford, a collection of dogs descended from the original marriage. He decided to showcase them on Kennel Club Show in 1908, where they attracted much interest. They entered the classroom for Every Variety Retriever, and described as Yellow Retriever Flatcoated. ‘Golden Retriever’ The term was first coined around this time, and has been associated with Lord Harcourt.
